Introduction
ReferenceTechnical Information Bulletin, TIBU5097 12 June, "False Warning for Low Transmission Oil Level on Some Off-Highway Trucks"ReferenceTechnical Information Bulletin, TIBU5059 19 June, "Erratic Shifting of the Transmission due to Aeration of the Transmission Oil on Specific Off-Highway Trucks"This technical information bulletin replaces a technical information bulletin that was written on 03July 2007. Please disregard Technical Information Bulletin, TIBU5419-00, "Calculations for Clutch Slippage on the Transmissions on 793D Off-Highway Trucks". Refer to the following technical information bulletin.Problem
There is a known issue regarding inconsistent shift times in the transmissions for 793D machines. The problem with the shift times results in two perceptible differences when you compare the shift times to the transmissions on 793C machines.
When you view the clutch slippage on a trend graph, the clutch slippage on the793D machines is less consistent than the clutch slippage on the 793C machines. The mean shift time of the793D machines is higher than the mean shift time of the 793C machines.
Compare the histogram data for all of the shifts on the 793D trucks to the 793C trucks. The standard deviation is larger on 793D trucks.New software has been tested in order to resolve this issue. A slight change was noted in the data. The VIMS data for the shift times on the 793D machines appears to be accurate. Testing of the shift times is being conducted in order to determine the variation in the shift time. This will help the engineers to better understand the root cause of the variation in the shift time so that corrective action can be identified. At this time, no corrective action has been identified.Solution
Until a permanent solution is identified, ensure that the transmissions on the trucks are properly filled with the correct oil. Refer to both of the above listed documents for additional information. Continue to monitor the trends in the shift times in order to look for changes that might occur over time. A new flash file for the power train is available on the service information system (SIS). The new 332-5691 Power Train Software Gp is not the permanent corrective action for the issue. The new 332-5691 Power Train Software Gp will result in a 20 percent improvement in the calculations for the shift time in the transmissions. The software that will be the permanent corrective action for the issue will be released at a later date.If a truck has symptoms that are different from other trucks, contact Jim Smith, Jr. Also, if a truck logs multiple TOS indicators for the transmission 27-718-14, contact Jim Smith, Jr. Contact Jim Smith, Jr by the below listed methods:Email: smith_james_a_ jr
