The information supplied in this serviceletter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Donot perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the terminationdate without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst. The Spindle needs to be replaced in the frontaxle final drives of certain 988F II Wheel Loaders. The 1427562 Spindlemay fail in the unmachined transition area between the splined barrel ofthe spindle and machined seal ramp of the duo cone seal on the mountingflange.AFFECTED PRODUCT

This is a 28-hour job to replace spindleson front axle. Additional parts and labor to repair contingent damage areallowed if explained in claim story. If a tire company is used to removeand reinstall tires/rims reduce labor hours and note tire company chargein claim story. If a spindle has failed on one of the front finaldrives, replace the other front axle final drive to avoid second failure.One Final Drive:Refer to rework procedure in SENR5729-03 toreplace failed 1427562 Spindle with a 1978287 Spindle in one final drive.
Remove tire/rim
Remove final drive from axle arrangement.
Remove planet carrier assembly.
Remove final drive wheel from spindle.
Reassemble final drive using new spindle and othernew components.
Additionally replace any parts damaged by spindlefailure debris.
Reassemble planet carrier assembly.
Reassemble final drive to axle arrangement.
Reinstall tire/rim.
To replace spindles on both front axle final drivesthis program allows 28 hours of labor. Additional parts and labor to repaircontingent damage are allowed if explained in claim story. If a tire companyis used to remove and reinstall tires/rims reduce labor hours and notetire company charge in claim story.
