Current Caterpillar Connecting RodsMany current Caterpillar engines have connecting rods that have a tapered pin bore. The taper makes the pin bore stronger. Because the pin bore is tapered, the pin bearing is also tapered. This tapered design is used on 5.4" bore, 3400 and 3208 Engines and will also be used in others in the future.
This tapered design makes it necessary to have some special tools to remove and install the bearings when these engines are rebuilt or need repairs. The 6V100 Tool Arrangement is available for this purpose. The 6V100 Tool Arrangement must be used to remove and install taper type bearings correctly. Use of other removal and installation tools can damage the bearings.
With the 6V100 Tool Arrangement a taper type bearing can be removed and a new one installed simultaneously (at the same time). With the use of adapters, this new tool can also be used on engines that have connecting rods and bearings that have straight sides. Until February 16, 1979 this tool arrangement is available at a 20% discount. Caterpillar strongly recommends that dealers evaluate their current and potential engine population and place orders for this tool arrangement.
