Keep the engine speed low until the engine oil fault alarm and indicator shuts off. If the light will not shut off within ten seconds, stop the engine. Investigate the cause before starting again.
Transmission/converter temperature and the voltmeter gauge should be in the green zone.1. Allow the engine to warm up at LOW IDLE for five minutes. Hold BOOM DOWN control for one minute, then release for one minute. Repeat this procedure until hydraulic system is warm enough to operate implements.2. Look at the gauges frequently during operation.3. The parking brake indicator will remain on until the parking brake is released.When idling the engine for warm-up, observe the following recommendations:* In temperatures above 0°C (32°F), warm-up requires approximately 15 minutes.* In temperatures below 0°C (32°F), warm-up requires approximately 30 minutes or more.* In temperatures below -18°C (0°F), or if hydraulic functions are sluggish, more time may be required.Test Parking Brake System
Personal injury or death could result without observing the following information.Be sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions.Test the brakes on a dry, level surface.Fasten the seat belt before testing the brakes.
1. Start the engine and raise the implements slightly. 2. With the parking brake applied, shift the transmission to 4th gear forward.The parking brake light must come on and the alarm horn should sound.3. Gradually increase the engine speed close to HIGH IDLE. The machine must not move.
If the machine begins to move, reduce the engine speed immediately and apply the service brake pedals.
4. Reduce engine speed, shift the transmission to NEUTRAL, engage neutral lock, lower the implements to the ground, and stop the engine.
If the machine moved while testing, have your Caterpillar dealer inspect the brakes. If necessary, repair the parking brake before returning the machine to operation.
Moving the Machine
Keep the machine under control at all times.Do not shift the transmission to NEUTRAL to allow the machine to coast.Select the gear speed necessary before starting downgrade. Do not change gears while going downhill.A good practice is to use the same gear range going downgrade that would be used to go up the grade.Do not allow the engine to overspeed downhill. Use the brake pedals to reduce engine overspeed going downhill.When the load will be pushing the machine, put the transmission lever in 1st speed before starting downhill.Do not use brake pedals as foot rests, to avoid early brake wear or damage.1. Raise all lowered implements enough to clear any obstructions. 2. Push down on the brake pedals to keep the machine from moving.Make sure the lock bar is installed between the brake pedals if operating above first gear range.3. Release the parking brake.4. Release forward-reverse (neutral) lock. 5. Move the transmission control levers to the desired direction and speed.6. Release the brake pedals to move the machine.7.
