Procedure 1 - Clearing An 04 Diagnostic Code
This procedure clears (removes) an 04 diagnostic code that is not currently present. Also see the Reference.
After each of the following Steps, turn the ECS switch from STOP to OFF/RESET to STOP again and check if the 04 diagnostic code remains. If the 04 diagnostic code remains, then go to the next Step.1. Turn the engine control switch to the OFF/RESET position.2. Momentarily disconnect battery power to the ECM.3. Check that the programmed setpoints are correct and reprogram any setpoints that are not correct. Any setpoints that are specified to be "0" must be reprogrammed to a different value and then returned to "0".4. If the 04 diagnostic code still persists after these three Steps, then replace the ECM. The replacement ECM must be an 8T9881-08 or an 8T9881-07 with a yellow paint dot on the top side of the front casting, beside the security seal. See the illustration.Procedure 2 - Prevention Of 04 Diagnostic Code
This procedure is recommended for any genset that has had 04 diagnostic codes.
Testing has proven that the use of ferrite suppression cores reduces conducted EMI; thereby greatly decreasing the occurrence of 04 diagnostic codes. The following Steps describe the installation of 1006097 Ferrite Suppression Beads (cores) on the positive and negative battery wires connected to the ECM. The cores simply clamp on the existing wire with no need to cut or splice wires. Two 1006097 Ferrite Suppression Beads (cores) are required for this procedure.
1. At the ECM, place one suppression core on the 10 AWG wire that connects to the +B terminal post. Place the core as close to the ECM as possible; see Illustration.2. At the ECM, place one suppression core on the 10 AWG wire that connects to the -B terminal post. Place the core as close to the ECM as possible; see Illustration.3. Use tape, tie-wraps or similar material to secure the suppression cores to the wires and to prevent wire abrasion.
