Operator Console Does Not Communicate with Machine
Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
Test Step 1. Determine if a Link has been Established Between the Operator Console and the Machine.
Using Cat ET, determine if a link has been established between the Operator Console and the machine.
A link has been established between the Operator Console and the machine. OK – A link has been established.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK – A link has not been established. The message "abnormal update rate" is displayed in Cat ET.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Test Step 2. Operator Console Remote Control Start Up.
Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU8835, "Cat® Command for Dozing, Operator Console with RFID"
A link has been established between the Operator Console and the machine OK – Cat ET has detected a link Operator Console and the machine.
STOP.
Not OK – Cat ET has not detected a link Operator Console and the machine.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Test Step 3. Check the CAN Circuit.
A. Use Cat ET to verify that all ECMs are on and communicating.
All ECMs are on and communicating. OK – All ECMs are on and communicating.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Not OK – One or more of the ECMs are not communicating.
Repair: Check the power circuits for each of the ECMs not responding.
STOP.
Test Step 4. Check The Resistance of the CAN Data Link
A. Turn the Manual / Remote Mode switch to the Manual position.
B. Disconnect the 70-pin connector from the RCM.
C. Take the following measurement at the 70-pin connector of the RCM. Measure the resistance between wire R970-WH(White)and wire R976-BU(Blue).
Note the resistances.
The resistance measurement is 60.0 6 ohms. OK – The resistance measurement is 60 6 Ohms.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Not OK – The resistance measurement is NOT 60 6 Ohms.
Repair: Locate the Termination resistors for the machine. Disconnect the 3-pin connector for both of the termination resistors. Measure the resistance across contact A and contact B for one resistor. Measure the resistance across contact A and contact B for the other resistor. The resistance measurements should be 120 12 Ohms for each resistor. Replace the termination resistors that did not measure 120 12 ohms.
STOP.
Test Step 5. Check the CAN Data Link for a Short to Ground.
A. The Manual / Remote Mode switch remains in the Manual position.
B. Take the following measurement at the 70-pin connector of the RCM. Measure the resistance between wire R970-WH(White)and frame ground. Measure the resistance between wire R976-BU(Blue)and frame ground.
Note the resistances.
The resistance measurements are greater than 5000 ohms. OK – The resistance measurements are greater than 5000 Ohms.
Proceed to Test Step 6.
Not OK – One or both of the resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms.
Repair: The CAN data link is shorted to ground. The short may be in the harness or one of the Electronic Control Modules. Disconnect all the Electronic controls from the CAN data link and repeat this step. If the resistance still measures less than 5 ohms after disconnecting the ECMs, repair or replace the harness.
