"Starter Motor" Relay connectionsThis diagnostic code is associated with the "Starter Motor" Relay. The FMI 06 diagnostic code means that the Machine ECM has determined that the current of the relay circuit is above normal.Conditions that can cause this diagnostic code are listed below:
The limp home switch is shorted internally.
The relay is shorted internally.
The energize circuit of the relay is shorted to a ground source.
The ECM has failed. This situation is unlikely.Note: Before performing this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in the circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, secure and in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure. Note: The following test procedure may cause other diagnostic codes to be activated. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the problem has been corrected.Note: The coil resistance of the start relay should measure 27.3 3 ohms at 20 °C (68.0 °F). Test Step 1. CHECK THE RELAY
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the starter relay with from the machine harness.
While observing the status of the diagnostic code, turn the disconnect switch to the ON position. Turn the key start switch to the START position for a few seconds.Expected Result:The CID 0444 FMI 06 diagnostic code changes to a CID 0444 FMI 05 diagnostic code when the relay is disconnected.Results:
YES - The CID 0444 FMI 06 diagnostic code changes to a CID 0444 FMI 05 diagnostic code when the relay is disconnected. The circuit is correct.Repair: The relay has failed. Repeat this test "CHECK THE RELAY" in order to verify the failure of the relay. Check the resistance of the relay coil. Measure the resistance from contact 1 to contact 2 on the relay connector. The resistance of a good relay coil should be 27.3 3 ohms at 20 °C (68.0 °F). To cause this problem, the resistance of the relay coil is most likely much less.Replace the relay. Verify that the new relay corrects the problem.STOP
NO - The CID 0444 FMI 06 diagnostic code remains active. Disconnecting the relay did not change the status of the diagnostic code. Proceed to Test Step 2.Test Step 2. CHECK THE ENERGIZE CIRCUIT OF THE RELAY FOR A SHORT TO GROUNDThe relay remains disconnected from the machine harness.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect the machine harness connectors J1 and J2 from the Machine ECM.
At the machine harness connectors for the ECM, measure the resistance from the signal contact J2-7 (wire 306-GN) to frame ground. Measure the resistance from the signal contact J2-7 (wire 306-GN) to all contacts used in the machine harness connectors for the ECM.Expected Result:Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms.Results:
OK - Each resistance measurement is greater than 5000 ohms.
