This article explains the methods used to service engine software for 3500 commercial engines equipped with (EUI) and the 3500B commercial engines.
Background Information
Engine software is the coded information used to control many engine functions. Among this coded information are various maps used to control aspects such as fuel delivery, timing, and smoke. The engine software is stored on a computer chip called a Personality Module. The Personality Module itself is installed on the inside of the Electronic Control Module (ECM), behind an access cover. The ECM functions as the governor and fuel system computer. The ECM receives input signals from the sensors and energizes the injector solenoids to control injection timing and fuel metering.
The electronic control system (ECM, Personality Module, software, etc) in the Caterpillar EUI engine is termed the "Advanced Diesel Engine Management System" or "ADEM". The 3500B engine and 3500 engine equipped with EUI control is based on the second generation of the Advanced Diesel Engine Management System, referred to as "ADEM II".
The "ADEM II" Personality Module uses a "Flash" memory chip. The ECM has the capability to reprogram the Flash memory chip internally. This process is called Flash downloading. For Flash downloading, only the software file needs to be acquired and "Flashed" onto the existing Personality Module. Therefore, software for the 3500B commercial engines and 3500 commercial engine equipped with EUI can be serviced in two ways that follow: 1. FLASH download the software onto the existing engine Personality Module. FLASH downloading will be discussed in more detail later in this article.2. Purchase a new "Service Replacement Chip" with the correct software preprogrammed.
An engines "Software" and "Service Replacement Chip" part numbers may be determined by one of the following methods: 1. ET (Electronic Technician) ECM Summary Screen2. TMI (Technical Marketing Information) system3. SIS Setup and Tool Guide CD4. FIND System
ET (Electronic Technician) ECM Summary Screen
1. Install ET (Electronic Technician) on the engine.2. Select "ECM Summary" from the information menu, or press the "ECM Summary" icon from the tool bar.3. The "Personality Module Part Number" displayed is the Software part number. This part number may no longer be the current production software part number. To find the current production part number, refer to information in the SIS, and FIND sections of this article.4. By adding one to the last digit of the displayed Personality Module Part Number, the "Service Replacement" part number is obtained for generator set engines. (for example: if 138-8780 is the Software part number, then 138-8781 is the Service Replacement part number).
