The secondary steering pump is located on the rear of the tractor.When the machine moves forward, the upper transfer gear rotates. This rotates drive shaft (6) and barrel (7). Nine pistons (8) also rotate. The ends of pistons (8) are in the shape of a ball. The ball is connected to a retraction plate and slippers. The retraction plate and the slippers rotate with barrel (7). The retraction plate and the slippers are in contact with swashplate (5). Swashplate (5) does not rotate. There is a journal bearing on each side of swashplate (5). The journal bearings are mounted on the pump body. The journal bearings allow swashplate (5) to pivot. This changes the angle of swashplate (5) .Pistons (8) will move in and out of barrel (7) as the slippers follow the angle of swashplate (5). Also, swashplate (5) is at the maximum position and drive shaft (6) and barrel (7) are rotating. As piston (8) moves out of barrel (7), oil enters barrel (8). As barrel (7) rotates, piston (8) pushes the oil out of the barrel. The high pressure oil exits barrel (7) and the oil enters the steering system.During normal machine operation, swashplate (5) will be set at an angle. This angle will maintain a flow of oil to the pressure and flow compensator valve. The pump control valve maintains the margin pressure. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Pump Control Valve (Secondary Steering) - Test and Adjust" for the margin pressure setting of the pump control valve. The hydraulic and steering pump provides all of the oil that is necessary to operate the steering system. The secondary steering pump will supplement the hydraulic and steering pump when the machine is moving forward.Note: The secondary steering pump will not supply oil to the steering system when the machine is moving in reverse.
