The servicing position of a 385C FS Excavator is shown in this illustration. The bucket is flat on the ground.
Put the machine in the servicing position. The bucket must rest flat on the ground after the boom is lowered.
Remove the key which starts the machine. Secure the cab.
Disconnect all power and ground leads from the batteries in order to avoid possible damage to the electronic components. Weld Repair Procedure

Gouge the crack. Gouge 100 mm (4 inch) past the end or the crack on each end (6) .

(7) 2 mm (0.08 inch) gap (8) 30° bevel
Open the gap 2 mm maximum (7) .
Grind a 30° bevel on each side of the crack (8) .
Preheat the area that will be welded to 250° C.
Weld the gouged area. Clean the weld after each pass. Grind the weld flush to the surface.
Perform a UT inspection to ensure that the rework has been done properly.
Paint the reworked area with a Caterpillar approved paint.Requirements For The Personnel
The Ultrasonic Test Inspector must have a Level 2 or an equivalent qualification in order to perform this procedure. The specifications for Level 2 are defined in ISO9712:2005 or ASNT-TC-1A:2006.Location - Control Area
Check the surface condition of the area to be inspected. It should be clean and free of dirt, grease, oil, or other fluids. Clean the area with a Caterpillar approved solvent.

Plot the longitudinal axis of the part based on the measured dimensions to the end of the ears. Refer to Illustration 7.

Identify the upper limit of 450 mm probing the upper edge of the weld on the axis. Refer to Illustration 8.

Determined by sensing the position of the upper edge of the cap, then its complete circular contour. Refer to Illustration 9.
Calibrate the ultrasound station. Place the echo of a hole (1.5 mm in diameter) to 25 mm in depth to 80% of screen height.

Inspect a width of 50 mm on either side of the circle previously determined by probing. Refer to the hatched area in 10.Acceptance Criteria
Indication over 80% over a length of 5 mm maximum.
Indications between 20% and 80% over a length of 25 mm maximum.
All indications may represent more than 10% of the total length of the weld.Machine Profile Information Form
