Remove the front housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Housing - Remove".
Remove the flywheel housing. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Flywheel Housing - Remove".
Remove the crankshaft front seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Front Seal - Remove".
Remove the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Crankshaft Rear Seal - Remove".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Put the engine in position on Tool (A) .
Check the main bearing caps and the connecting rod bearing caps for identification for the location and the direction in the cylinder block. All bearing caps must be installed in the same position prior to removal.

Loosen the nuts that hold each connecting rod bearing cap (1). Rotate the crankshaft in order to loosen all the nuts. The nuts must be tight enough to hold the connecting rod bearing caps in position when the crankshaft is rotated.

Be sure that the "V" timing marks are aligned on idler gear (3) and crankshaft gear (2).
Remove connecting rod bearing caps (1) .

Remove the lower half of the connecting rod bearing (4) from the connecting rod bearing cap.
