Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Drive the machine to a smooth, horizontal surface.

Move propel lever (3) to the NEUTRAL position.
Rotate speed dial (2) to the MINIMUM position.
Move parking brake switch (1) to the ON position.

Move screed lift switch (5) to the FLOAT position. Lower the screed to the ground.Note: The screed lift switch on the inactive instrument panel must also be in the FLOAT position in order to lower the screed.
Move hopper switch (4) to the LOWER position. Fully lower the hoppers.

Move throttle control switch (6) to the LOW IDLE position. Hold the switch in this position for less than 1 second.
Move engine start switch (7) to the OFF position after the engine reaches low idle.

Open engine compartment cover (8) .

Remove fan grill (9) .

Install a strip of reflective tape (10) from Tool (A) on the hub of the cooling fan.Note: Alternatively, the reflective tape may be installed on a fan blade, close to the hub.
Replace fan grill (9) .

Open right access panel (11) .

Unplug connector (12) to the fan solenoid. This connector is located under the fan support and this connector is accessed from the right access panel.
Move engine start switch (7) to the START position. Release the engine start switch after the engine starts.
Move throttle control switch (6) to the HIGH IDLE position. Hold the switch in this position for less than 1 second. The engine speed should increase to 2200 rpm.

Monitor the hydraulic oil temperature on the operator display. Operate the machine until the oil temperature reaches 43 5.6 °C (110 10 °F).
Use Tool (A) to measure fan speed. Fan speed should be 2100 100 rpm.
Move throttle control switch (6) to the LOW IDLE position. Hold the switch in this position for less than 1 second.
Move engine start switch (7) to the OFF position after the engine reaches low idle.
If the fan speed is within the specified range, go to Step 23. If the fan speed is outside the specified range, go to Step 22.
Troubleshoot the fan pump and the motor for problems. Repair any problems. Go back to Step 15 in order to recheck fan speed.
Reconnect connector (12) to the fan solenoid. Close right access panel (11) .
Close engine compartment cover (8) .
