Remove cover (1) for the crankshaft's timing window. Remove crankshaft timing pin (2) from the storage position.Note: If the crankshaft timing pin's guide sleeve is damaged and/or bent, the results will be incorrect when the crankshaft timing pin is installed. If the guide sleeve is damaged and/or bent, install a new guide sleeve.Note: Prelube the engine for crankshaft rotation. Rotating the crankshaft before prelube may cause damage to the crankshaft bearings if the mating surface is dry.

Operate the prelube pump and use the barring device to turn the flywheel in the direction of normal engine rotation. Turn the flywheel until timing pin (5) can be installed through guide sleeve (4) into crankshaft timing pin bracket (3) .Note: If the flywheel is turned beyond the point of installation for the timing pin, the gear lash must be removed from the timing gears. Turn the flywheel in the opposite direction of normal rotation for approximately 20 degrees. Then turn the flywheel in the direction of normal engine rotation until the timing pin can be installed.

Remove the valve cover from the No. 1 cylinder head.The No. 1 piston is on the compression stroke if the inlet and exhaust valves for the No. 1 cylinder are fully closed and the rocker arms can be moved by hand.The No. 1 piston is on the exhaust stroke if the rocker arms cannot be moved and the valves are slightly open.For the cylinders to service according to the corresponding crankshaft position, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Crankshaft Positions for Fuel Timing and Valve Lash Setting".
If the crankshaft is rotated when the timing pin is installed, the timing pin will break. This can result in further damage. Make sure to remove the timing pin before the crankshaft is rotated.
If the No. 1 piston is on the exhaust stroke but the compression stroke is desired, remove the timing pin from the engine. Operate the prelube pump and turn the flywheel for 360 degrees in the direction of normal engine rotation.
