Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
The rear axle housing thrust washer on the products listed below needs to be inspected for proper orientation. The chamfer on the inside of the thrust washer must face away from the bearing assembly. The thrust washer chamfer provides clearance for the radius on the thrust face of the pin assembly.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated July 18, 2001 when scheduling this service. You will not be charged for the service performed.

REWORK PROCEDURE
The chamfer on the inside of the thrust washer must face away from the bearing. The chamfer provides clearance for the radius on the thrust face of the pin assembly. If the thrust washer orientation is verified and no gap is found, no further action is required.
If improper orientation or thrust washer cracking is confirmed, disassemble rear axle housing, inspect all components, replace thrust washer and reassemble rear axle housing with new bolts. Refer to applicable Test & Adjust, Disassembly & Assembly procedures.
Use a feeler gauge or shim to check for a gap between the thrust washer and bearing face. A .008" to .012" gap will indicate incorrect
