Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately.
Ensure that the engine is stopped before any servicing or repair is performed.
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.
Replace the secondary fuel filter elements whenever the following conditions occur:
The recommended service interval is reached.
The monitoring system indicates that the secondary fuel filters are plugged.
Use a suitable container to catch any fuel that might spill. Clean up any spilled fuel immediately.
Note: Service tools are available to aid in the service of the fuel filters. Consult your Cat dealer for the part names and part numbers. Follow the instructions that are supplied with the service tools.If service tools are not available, follow the procedure below:

Stop the engine.
Shut off fuel supply.
Remove all debris from the fuel filter assembly.
Loosen air purge screw (1) at the top of the filter base.
Remove drain plug (2) and drain fuel into a suitable container.
Use a strap wrench or the hex fitting (3) to remove the filter element housing (4).
Remove old filter element from inside the housing and discard.
Inspect the condition of the new element.
Install new filter element into housing (4). Ensure that the o-ring seal is installed in the top of the housing.Note: Do not fill the new filter element and housing with fuel prior to installing.
Install filter housing and new element into the fuel filter base using a strap wrench or hex under the lower housing.

Tighten the lower housing until there is no gap between the housing and base.
Close drain valve and tighten air purge screw. Torque the air purge screw to 22 4 N m (16 3 lb ft).
