Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Some engines use Extended Life Coolant (ELC). If an ELC was previously used, flush the cooling system with clean water. No other cleaning agents are required.Flushing a Standard Coolant from the Cooling System
If you change to an ELC from another type of coolant, use a Caterpillar cleaning agent to flush the cooling system. After you drain the cooling system, thoroughly flush the cooling system with clean water. All of the cleaning agent must be removed from the cooling system.Draining and Flushing Procedure
Drain the coolant whenever the coolant is dirty or whenever foaming is observed.The radiator cap is positioned under the access door in the top of the hood.
Slowly loosen the radiator cap in order to relieve system pressure. Remove the radiator cap.

The drain valve is accessible from the underside of the machine. Open the drain valve. Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
Close the drain valve. If you drained a standard coolant from the system proceed to Step 4. If you drained ELC from the system proceed to Step 6.
Fill the system with a solution which consists of clean water and of cooling system cleaner. The concentration of the cooling system cleaner should be 6 to 10 percent.
Start the engine. Run the engine for 90 minutes. Stop the engine. Drain the cleaning solution into a suitable container.
While the engine is stopped, flush the system with water. Flush the system until the draining water is clear.
Close the drain valve.

Start the engine. Run the engine without the radiator cap until the thermostat opens and the coolant level stabilizes.
Check the coolant level. Make necessary adjustments to the coolant level.
If the gasket is damaged, replace the radiator cap. Install the radiator cap.
Stop the engine.
