Introduction
This instruction describes the reasons to update the recoil spring that is located between the front track roller frame and the rear track roller frame. The front idler is attached to the front track roller frame. The front idler is designed to recoil from overloads in certain operating conditions. A limited amount of recoil is normal. This limited recoil protects the moving undercarriage, final drive, and the components of the track frame from overloads. A strong recoil spring that has the proper preload will limit the frequency and the amount of front idler recoil. Excessive idler recoil increases the risk of track jumping or popping at the sprocket. One of the greatest causes of excessive track jumping is a track that is too loose. This condition is also known as too much track sag. Properly setting the track tension (track sag) within the specified tolerance is critical. The correct setting ensures proper performance of the machine and of the undercarriage. The procedure to set track tension is covered in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Track Adjustment". Ensuring proper track tension includes removing air from the track adjuster cylinder. Air in the track adjuster cylinder can also cause track jumping. After ensuring proper track tension, excessive idler recoil and track jumping may still occur when the following conditions are present:
Frequent tight turning in stiff underfoot conditions
Moving up a slope under load in reverse
High amount of mud or packing of debris in the track
A heavily equipped machine with one or more attachments such as a winch, ripper, slope board, spill plate, sweeps, etc.
Fatigue has caused the recoil spring to weaken, lose preload, and reduce the spring rateSafety
Do not attempt to disassemble or assemble this machine until you read and understand the disassembly and assembly instructions. Improper disassembly and assembly procedures could result in injury or death.
Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment.To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from the negative (-) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system.Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on.
The machine must be on a level, hard surface before a separation of the track is made. Any time a separation of both tracks is made, the machine must have blocks correctly positioned so the machine will not move.
Loaders with Conventional Undercarriage
Loaders with a Heavy Duty or a Sealed and Lubricated Track may experience excessive idler recoil and track jumping. First, ensure that the loader has proper track tension (track sag). Then, determine if any of the five conditions that are listed above are present. Excessive track jumping is often amplified when more than one of these factors are present at the same time.
