Engine Cooling Fan Directional Solenoid : Out of Calibration The code is logged. Conventional Fan
The Electronic Control Module (ECM) supplies current to the engine fan control solenoid. The engine fan control solenoid controls the pressure to the fan pump by allowing oil to bypass the fan pump. The fan pump drives the fan. For accuracy, the ECM must determine the relationship between the current to the engine fan control solenoid and the actual fan speed. Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) enables the user to calibrate the current to a known fan speed manually.Note: The ECM will use a nominal current to drive the engine fan control solenoid on the initial calibration. The ECM uses the last calibrated value as the starting point on subsequent calibrations.
Select the "Service" tab and select "Calibrations". Start the "Fan Calibration".
Meet the required conditions to proceed with the calibration. Follow the directions that are provided on Cat ET. Proceed by pressing the "Next" button.
Measure actual fan speed with the following service tools and Software License, NETG5044:
348-5430 Multi-Tool Gp
308-7264 Multitach Tool Gp
If actual fan speed matches the fan speed on Cat ET, press the "Next" button.
Actual fan speed may not match the fan speed on Cat ET. The current must be decremented or incremented to change fan speed.
When actual fan speed matches the fan speed on Cat ET, the calibration is complete. Follow the directions that are provided on Cat ET.Bidirectional Fan
The ECM controls the speed and direction of the fan by directly controlling the current to the engine fan control solenoid in the fan motor. As current is applied to the solenoid, the forward fan speed decreases until an intermediate current commands the fan to stop (zero speed). As the current continues to increase to the solenoid, the direction of the fan reverses and the speed continues to increase.Cat ET enables the user to calibrate the current to a known fan speed and/or the zero speed.Note: To calibrate the bidirectional fan, no additional service tools are required. The actual fan speed is displayed directly in the Cat ET "Fan Calibration" screen. To calibrate the fan, follow the procedure below:
Select the "Service" tab in Cat ET.
Click "Engine Cooling Fan Calibrations".
Click "Directional Fan Solenoid Current".
Meet the required conditions by following the directions that are provided. Then click "Next".
The ECM will automatically adjust the current to reduce the fan speed. Once the fan speeds drops to less than 100 rpm, proceed by clicking "Next".
The ECM will continue to adjust the current automatically which will cause the fan to stop. Calibration is complete.Note: If the fan does not stop completely, repeat the calibration procedure.
