Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
For all relief valve tests, the recommended method to test a relief valve is to remove the valve from the machine and use a test bench to test and adjust the valve.

Main Control Valve (1) Rod end line relief valve for the tilt cylinder. (2) Head end line relief valve for the auxiliary cylinder. (3) Head end line relief valve for the tilt cylinder. (4) Rod end line relief valve for the auxiliary cylinder. (5) Main relief valve.
Start the engine and run the engine at high idle. Operate the control levers and move all the cylinders in order to increase the temperature of the hydraulic oil to normal operating temperature.

Lift Arm Supports
Lower the lift arms to the stands.
Shut off the engine.
Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release".

Loader Tower Access Panel
Remove the loader tower access panel in order to access the main relief valve and the line relief valves.

Hitch Area (6) Pressure tap.
Connect 1U-5481 Pressure Gauge Group on pressure tap (6) .
Start the engine. Raise the bucket to the maximum height.Note: In the following steps, do not keep the lift control lever in the RAISE position for more than five seconds while the pressure is at the relief setting.
Increase the engine speed to high idle. Observe the pressure gauge and move the lift control lever to the RAISE position.
On a standard machine, the pressure setting of main relief valve (5) should be approximately 20700 kPa (3000 psi).
On a logging machine, the pressure setting of main relief valve (5) should be approximately 19000 kPa (2750 psi).Note: If the pressure setting is correct, proceed to Step 10. If the pressure setting of the main relief valve is not at the specification, proceed with the following steps.

Main Relief Valve (7) Locknut. (8) Adjusting screw.
Shut off the engine.
Loosen locknut (7). Turn adjustment screw (8) clockwise in order to increase the pressure setting. One quarter turn will increase the relief valve setting by 1310 kPa (190 psi). Turn adjustment screw (8) counterclockwise in order to decrease the pressure setting of the relief valve. One quarter turn will decrease the relief valve setting by 1310 kPa (190
