The display will automatically indicate certain diagnostic codes as they occur. The DIAGNOSTIC DATA screens provide the advantage of indicating why the vehicle Check Engine lamp has come on. The codes will be displayed with their SAE J1587 defined PID - FMI (Parameter Identifier - Failure Mode Identifier) and a brief text description. If more than one code is active, pressing the Down arrow key will scroll through the remaining codes. If only one code is active, pressing the Down arrow key will return the display to the DIAGNOSTIC DATA title screen. If a code becomes inactive while it is being viewed, it will disappear from the screen and the display will indicate other codes or No Active Codes as appropriate.The codes listed in the Automatically Displayed Diagnostic Codes chart are automatically displayed any time they are active. The display will continue to show these codes until any key is pressed, or the diagnostic goes from a bad state, to a good state. At this time, the Cat ID will return to the screen that was displayed before the diagnostic event (unless another code is active).The codes are displayed to alert a driver to a potential engine damaging condition. Codes 100 - 11 Very Low Oil Pressure, 111 - 11 Very Low Coolant Level, and 110 - 11 Very High Coolant Temperature indicate the engine is experiencing a serious problem.
Depending on truck configuration, the engine may shut down when a potentially serious engine problem diagnostic code becomes active. The operator will be provided a warning indication 20 seconds before engine shutdown.
To avoid a hazardous condition that may cause injury or death, steer the vehicle to a suitable location to stop immediately when the warning code appears.
What to Do When a Code OccursWhenever a diagnostic code occurs, try to note all operating conditions of the vehicle. It is especially critical to take note of the operating conditions for intermittent codes. This provides the technicians with the operating conditions at the time the code occurred. This will enhance the technician's ability to recreate or properly diagnose and repair the problem. These codes are also recorded in the ECM for recovery by a technician using the proper electronic service tool. Diagnostic Code ChartThe following Suggested Driver Action for Diagnostic Codes chart is provided to help determine what action should be taken if a particular diagnostic code is active. It is intended as a general guideline, however current operating conditions should determine the drivers reaction to the codes.
