Component Code: 5050SUBJECT: Pilot Module ECM Problems in B-Series Telehandlers
PROBLEM:
Several reports have been received from the field regarding SSV2 (179-3524 and 231-1202) and SSV4 (179-3530 and 231-1204) Electrohydraulic Valve ECM failures. Potential causes have been identified. At the present time, the sole verified contributor among the potential root causes is moisture entry.
A variety of fault codes can be attributed to this problem: CID: 1845, 1846, 1847; FMI: -2, -5, -6, -9; 2101-8, 246-12. In addition to these fault codes, intermittent or complete loss of implement and stabilizer hydraulic functions may occur with this problem. This issue does not affect the frame level functions.
If any of the above-mentioned fault codes or symptoms are experienced, refer to Troubleshooting ? Testing and Adjusting, RENR5195, "TH220B, TH330B, TH350B, TH360B, TH460B, and TH560B Telehandlers".
If ECM failure is the only root cause identified, replace the relevant pilot module ECM. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS1635, June 1, 2003, "Field Installation of the Programmable Hydraulic Pilot Valve Arrangements". Following repair, advise your Technical Communicator to ensure that this report is loaded into SIMS.
SOLUTION:
Caterpillar is working to resolve the PHS moisture entry issue. In order to ensure that all possible moisture entry paths into the pilot module ECM are eliminated, the improved sealing of these components is currently undergoing testing. A field replacement program will be defined if required.
Any future modifications to the components will be identified with the release of a new part number. If new part numbers are released, serial number effectivity will be provided.
