Component Code 3020 3278 4313SUBJECT: BOLTS HOLDING THE DIFFERENTIAL BEVEL GEAR MAY FAIL ON SOME TELEHANDLERS
PROBLEM:
Failures of the 6V-1820 Bolts that hold the bevel gear to the differential case have occurred on the listed machines. The majority of the failures have occurred on machines that were primarily used in agriculture applications. All of the failures have occurred on the differentials in the front axle. This problem is still under investigation.
SOLUTION:
Until a permanent solution to the problem is developed, use the following procedure when you repair a differential with this problem.
Clean the surfaces of the bevel gear (2) and the differential case (3) that will contact each other. Also, clean the threaded holes that are in the bevel gear (2). Be sure that the surfaces are free of oil and grease.
Apply 4C-9507 Retaining Compound to the surfaces of the bevel gear (2) and the differential case (3) that will contact each other.
Install the bevel gear (2) on the differential case (3).
Apply a small amount of the 4C-9507 Retaining Compound to the threads of the new 6V-1820 Bolts (4). Install the bolts (4) in order to hold the bevel gear (2) to the differential case (3). Torque the bolts to 85Nm (65 lb-ft).
Install the differential into the center housing (1).
