Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Disassembly Procedure For Former Drive Shaft
1. Remove the belly pan from the tractor and retain for later assembly.2. Remove the cover plate from the rear of the transmission and retain for later assembly.3. Remove the retainer plate and ring from the end of the drive shaft and retain for later assembly.4. Pull the drive shaft from the rear of the transmission.5. Disconnect and remove the shaft cover hose from the engine housing.6. Disconnect the scavenge pump hose and retarder hose (if equipped) from the cage in the front of the case. Note: Use a suitable container to catch any oil that might leak from hose.7. Remove the cage from the front of the case.8. Remove the retainer from the drive shaft tube and pull out the tube with bearing from the differential.Assembly Procedure For New Shaft
1. Check the rear engine mounts for wear and replace if necessary.2. Assemble the new 8W-6822 Drive Shaft Tube with the 6V-3833 Seals into the differential using the tube retainer and hardware.3. Assemble the new 156-7817 Sleeve into the new 2H-3803 Bearing with an appropriate driver and secure with the new 1N-8620 Snap Ring.4. Assemble bearing assembly (position snap ring up) to 156-3404 Housing with an appropriate driver and secure with the 8D-2258 Ring.6. Assemble the scavenge pump hose and retarder hose (if equipped) to housing with flanges and hardware.7. Assemble drive shaft to tractor. Use the 7X-0300 Bolt in the front end of drive shaft during assembly. This will provide for easier handling of the shaft as it passes through the splined sleeve in the bearing. Remove the 7X-0300 Bolt after alignment has been made.8. Check the engine for proper alignment.9. Pull the drive shaft back far enough to assemble the 8F-4469 Seal to the 156-8472 Tube Assembly, position 156-8473 Hose to tube with 5P-1717 Clamps.10. Assemble tube to housing in the case and secure the clamps.11. Assemble the drive shaft through the transmission to the engine housing.12. Assemble the retainer ring and plate to the drive shaft.13. Assemble the cover plate to the rear of the transmission.14. Assemble the belly pan to the tractor.
