The controller is composed of the following components: an Electronic Control Module (ECM), control software, sensors, actuators, electronic fuel injectors and an interface to the generator systems.Speed of the generator set is controlled by the ECM. There are two ECM on the engine. The primary ECM is located on the front left of the engine. The secondary ECM is located on the right side of the engine. The primary ECM is used to govern the engine. The secondary ECM takes control of the engine if the secondary ECM senses a failure of the primary ECM.There is one primary speed/timing sensor and there is one secondary speed/timing sensor. Both sensors are inside the timing gear housing for the camshaft on the left side. Both the primary ECM and secondary ECM can use either the primary speed/timing sensor or the secondary speed/timing sensor. Engine speed is changed by controlling duration of the fuel injection. Each ECM can calculate the required duration of the fuel injection. When the Engine Control Switch is in the On position, the desired engine speed is isochronous at 1800 rpm. The desired rate of fuel delivery depends on the following factors: desired engine speed, the actual engine speed and the torque limit for fuel delivery. The ECM regulates the actual rate of fuel delivery in order to maintain the desired engine speed.
