Pressurized system: Hot coolant can cause serious burn. To open cap, stop engine, wait until radiator is cool. Then loosen cap slowly to relieve the pressure.
Mixing ELC with other products will reduce the effectiveness of the coolant.This could result in damage to cooling system components.If Caterpillar products are not available and commercial products must be used, make sure they have passed the Caterpillar EC-1 specification for pre-mixed or concentrate coolants and Caterpillar Extender.
Flushing the Extended Life Coolant From the Cooling System
Some engines utilize Extended Life Coolant. See the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule" to determine the service interval. If an Extended Life Coolant was previously used, flush the cooling system with clean water. No other cleaning agents are required.Flushing a Standard Coolant From the Cooling System
If you change the coolant of a machine to Extended Life Coolant from another type of coolant, use a Caterpillar cleaning agent to flush the cooling system. After you drain the cooling system, thoroughly flush the cooling system with clean water. All the cleaning agent must be removed from the cooling system.Drain the system
Allow the machine to cool before you change the coolant.
Open the engine hood. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Access Doors and Covers".

Slowly loosen the cap to relieve system pressure. Remove the cap.

To access radiator drain, remove cover at the rear of machine.

Open the drain (3) and allow the coolant to drain from the radiator into a suitable container.
Close the drain.
Replace the thermostat. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Water Temperature Regulator - Replace" for the process for replacing the thermostat.Fill the Cooling System
Add the coolant solution directly to the radiator.Note: Premix the coolant solution before filling the cooling system. The coolant solution should contain 50 percent coolant and 50 percent distilled water.Note: Add the coolant solution at a maximum rate of 5 L/min. This will reduce the chance of trapping air inside the engine block. A large amount of trapped air can cause localized heating to occur upon start-up. Localized heating may result in engine damage, which may lead to failure of the engine.
Start the engine. Run the engine without the radiator cap for 30 seconds. Stop the engine. Allow the engine to sit for 1 minute. Check the coolant level. If necessary, add coolant.
Check the coolant level in the coolant reservoir. Maintain the coolant level to the top mark on the tank.
Stop the engine. Inspect the cap for the coolant tank and the gasket. Replace the cap if the cap or the gasket is damaged. Install the cap.
Close the engine hood.
