This diagnostic code is recorded when the Advisor module reads the alternator voltage that is at contact R on the alternator as being below normal range (less than 24 volts for two seconds).Test Step 1. CHECK THE "R-TERMINAL" CABLE FOR SHORT TO BATTERY.
Disconnect the harness cable from the Advisor module.
Measure the resistance from contact 7 on the Advisor module to the + battery contact 1. Expected Result:The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms.Results:
OK - The resistance is greater than 5000 ohms. The harness is correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The resistance is not greater than 5000 ohms. There is a short to the "+ Battery".Repair: Repair the cable and verify that the fault has been removed. STOPTest Step 2. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
Measure the voltage at the battery posts. The harness cable remains disconnected from the Advisor module.Expected Result:The voltage is greater than 24 volts.Results:
YES - The voltage is greater than 24 VDC. Proceed to Test Step 3.
NO - The voltage is less than 24 VDC.Repair: The charging system is not correct. Check the charging system. See Special Instruction, REHS0354, "Charging System Troubleshooting". STOPTest Step 3. CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT THE ALTERNATOR.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the OFF position.
The harness cable remains disconnected from the Advisor module.
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Run the engine at high idle.
At the machine harness connector for the Advisor module, measure the voltage between contact 1 and contact 2. Expected Result:The voltage is greater than 24 VDC.Results:
YES - The voltage is greater 24 VDC. This should not cause the diagnostic code. The Advisor module may have failed.Repair: Inspect the connector. Connect the machine harness to the Advisor module. Check all connectors in the wire harness. If the CID 1251 FMI 04 remains active, exit this procedure and perform the diagnostic code procedure again. If the problem persists, the Advisor module may have failed. Prior to replacing the Advisor module, contact your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the Advisor module. NO - The voltage is less than 24 VDC. The machine harness has failed.Repair: Check the "+Battery" circuit and the ground circuit in the machine harness. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOP
