Removal Procedure
Start By:
Release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release".
Drain the hydraulic tank. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7468, "Hydraulic System Oil - Change".
Remove the gear pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR4812, "Gear Pump - Remove".
Remove the tire and rim. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Tire and Rim - Remove and Install".
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.
Personal injury or death can result without releasing all of the hydraulic pressure.Release all the pressure from the hydraulic system before any lines are disconnected.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Note: Put identification marks on all lines, hoses, wires, and tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps prevent fluid loss and contamination of the hydraulic system.Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before removal, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement.

Remove plug (1) beneath the tandem housing. Drain the hydraulic oil into a suitable container.
Apply 169-5464 Quick Cure Primer prior to the pipe sealant. Apply 5P-3413 Pipe Sealant on the threads of magnetic plug (1). Install magnetic plug (1) to the tandem housing.
Remove ten bolts (2) and the washers.
Remove cover (3) from tandem housing (4) .Note: Since the cover is sealed to the tandem housing, you may need to pry the cover.

Loosen eight nuts (5) that secure axle assembly (6) to the tandem housing.
Use a dead blow hammer to adjust the axle assembly toward the center of the machine.
Repeat Step 5 and Step 6 for the opposite axle.
