Regeneration
Regeneration is the process of increasing exhaust temperatures to remove soot from the DPF. Regeneration also reduces hydrocarbons across the DOC & DPF, reduce sulfur from SCR, and remove DEF deposits from the DEF injector. The DPF traps both soot and ash. The ash is removed through a manual cleaning process. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Diesel Particulate Filter - Clean" for more information on the service of the DPF.The Electronic Control Module (ECM) uses multiple inputs from the engine and the machine to determine the best time for regeneration to be performed. Regenerations take place throughout the operating cycle of the engine automatically.Automatic adjustments of engine speed may be noticed during regenerations. If regeneration is taking place and the engine is taken to low idle, the engine speed may remain elevated to maintain the regeneration.Under certain operating conditions, the regeneration may be stopped. The ECM will continue to monitor inputs to determine the best time to restart the regeneration. If needed, the operator will be notified via display that action is required to allow regeneration.
DPF - This indicator will illuminate to show that regeneration is required.Regeneration Triggers
Regeneration may be required for the following reasons:Soot: The DPF will collect soot produced by the engine. Automatic regeneration will become active to reduce soot level.Sulfation Regeneration: The SCR will have sulfur build up over time. The ECM will calculate sulfur buildup and once accumulation hits a threshold, will trigger regeneration to reduce sulfur.SCR Maintenance: Regeneration is performed to maintain the SCR system.Regeneration System Warning Indicators
Illustration 1 g02117258The DPF Indicator will illuminate solid when regeneration is required. Regeneration should be performed as soon as possible.Note: In some situations, the DPF indicator may stay illuminated after regeneration ends. The illuminated DPF indicator indicates that complete regeneration has not been performed. Complete regeneration is when the soot has been depleted or all the criteria for one of the other regeneration types have been met. If the DPF indicator stays illuminated, perform regeneration without interruption. The DPF indicator will shut off when regeneration is complete. If the soot load is above a threshold or sulfur is high, then regeneration is required. The DPF indicator will illuminate and flash slowly.
Illustration 2 g06261252Once the amount of soot or sulfur has exceeded a higher threshold, the DPF indicator will flash at a fast rate, and the check engine lamp (CEL) will illuminate.
Illustration 3 g06261268Once the amount of soot or sulfur collected reaches a critical threshold level, a red "STOP" lamp will illuminate in addition to the DPF indicator and CEL. 5 minutes after reaching the critical level, the engine will go to low idle. Three minutes after going to low idle, the engine will shut down. A key cycle will allow the engine to start again, but will again go to low idle after 5 minutes, and shutdown 3 minutes later.Once the amount of soot reaches an even more critical threshold level, the regeneration will be locked out. This only occurs for high soot. Regeneration will not be locked out for
