Pulleys
Wear in pulley grooves is caused by foreign material between belts and grooves. Pulley grooves that have wear must be inspected and reconditioned, if possible, since increased amounts of wear will decrease belt efficiency. Wear on the pulley groove changes the shape of each side of the groove from a flat surface to a curve. Wear also increases the width of the groove. These conditions gradually let the belt fall deeper into the groove until it runs more than 1.588 mm (.0625") below the top of the groove. See Illustration 48.
Illustration 48
Heavy pulley groove wear. Belt rides more than 1.588 mm (.0625") below the top of the groove.
To check groove wear in the field, tightly wrap a new belt around the pulley and measure the distance the belt runs above, or below, the top of the groove. Belts which run above the edge of the pulley will have a good service life if adjusted correctly. See Illustration 49.
Illustration 49
Good belt position.
When a new belt runs more than 1.588 mm (.0625") below the top of the groove, the pulley can be measured according to the procedure and specifications given in Guideline For Reusable Parts, SEBF8046, "Cast Iron And Steel Engine Pulleys". Information concerning measurement and cutting tools necessary for reconditioning specific cast iron and steel pulleys used in Caterpillar Engines is also listed. Refer to Chart A of this Guideline for specifications for 3208 water pump pulleys.
How To Use Pulley Specification Chart
When using Chart A, use Illustration 50 as a reference to find the exact areas of the pulley to be measured.
Pulley part numbers are found on a flat surface near the center of the pulley. If the part number is worn off, measure the diameter and approximate groove dimensions. Locate the measurements on the chart and then find the pulley part number.
