The steering column and metering pump (HMU) splines need to be inspected on the products listed below. The existing splines can wear resulting in loss of steering which may cause personal injury or death.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 14Jun2007 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure
The following inspection procedure will determine if the steering column and HMU pump splines are worn excessively. If worn excessively, both the steering column assembly and HMU will require replacement.
The inspection procedure below will require use of a 297-6383 Steering Spline Gage. The 297-6383 gage is a tool and is re-useable. Dealers should only order the number of gages that will be required.
The rework procedure will require greasing of the splines. The recommended grease is 1P0808 multipurpose grease (NLGI No.2) or equivalent.

1. Support the steering hydraulic metering pump (HMU) (1) . Do not loosen the hydraulic hose couplings (2).

2. Remove the floor mat (3).

3. Inside the cab remove the four bolts (4) that hold the pump.

4. Lower the pump in order to expose the splines (5). Do not remove the hydraulic lines.
5. Clean the male splines on the steering column. Clean the female splines in the pump.

6. Use the 297-6383 gage to determine if the splines are re-useable.

6a. If the gage slides onto the male spline then the splines are worn beyond re-use and the Steering Column Assembly and HMU pump must be replaced. Refer to the machine D&A (Disassembly and Assembly) procedure RENR6433 for removing the HMU pump and installing the new pump. Install sufficient 1P0808 grease in the HMU pump cup to fill the spline cup (6).
Removal of the steering column is performed as listed below:
i. Remove the steering wheel by removing the horn button, then remove the steering wheel nut and the steering wheel.
ii. Remove the two covers around the tilt lever mechanism (one fastener in the top cover, 3 fasteners in the bottom cover).
iii. Remove the plate that holds the gauge cluster by removing (6) M4 fasteners and (1) M6 fastener.
iv. Remove 2 bolts that are inside the console which bolt the console to the
