Check Precharge Pressure
Check the accumulator precharge pressure.Consult your Caterpillar dealer for correct testing procedure and pressure.Ether Starting Aid - Ether Cylinder
Ether is a poison and is flammable.Do not smoke while installing or changing the ether cylinder.Use ether only in well ventilated areas.Use ether with care to avoid fires.Do not store replacement cylinders in living areas or in the operator's compartment.Keep ether cylinders out of the reach of unauthorized personnel.Avoid breathing of the vapors or repeated contact of ether with the skin.Do not store cylinders at temperatures above 49°C (120°F).Do not store cylinders in direct sunlight.Do not puncture or burn cylinders.Discard empty cylinders in a safe place.
The ether cylinder valve is located on the right side of the engine compartment. Open the cover for installation or removal.Initial Installation
1. Remove the protective plug from the ether cylinder valve. 2. Store the plug in the threaded holder. Install the gasket into the valve. 3. Screw the ether cylinder (1) into the valve hand tight. Do not use any tools to tighten it. Fasten the cylinder clamp (2) securely around the cylinder.Changing
1. Loosen the cylinder clamp. Unscrew and remove the cylinder.2. Remove the used gasket. Install the new gasket, provided with the new cylinder. 3. Install a new cylinder. Tighten the cylinder hand tight. Refasten the cylinder clamp securely around the cylinder.Temporary Removal
Observe all safety precautions to store partially filled cylinders for future use.
1. Loosen the cylinder clamp. 2. Remove the cylinder and the gasket. Store the cylinder and the gasket in a safe place. 3. Remove the protective plug from the threaded holder. Screw it finger tight into the cylinder valve. 657E Only: Repeat the required procedure in the same sequence for the ether starting aid on the scraper engine.Cutting Edges and Router Bits
Inspect - Change or Rotate
Block the bowl and apron before changing the cutting edges or router bits.Support the cutting edges before removing the mounting bolts.
Change or rotate cutting edges or router bits before the mounting surfaces become worn.
1. Lower the bowl onto blocks. 2. Remove the lock bolt and the blocking pin from its storing position. 3. Turn the pin 90° and insert it in the blocking position under the raised apron. Install the lock bolt. Apply the parking brake and stop the engine.
Do not attempt to increase the wear life by hard surface welding on cutting edges or router bits. This can result in premature failure.
After removing cutting edges or router bits, clean all mounting surfaces before installing new edges or router bits or rotating used ones.See the "Ground Engaging Tool Bolt Torques" chart in this guide. With two edges to each section, double wear can be obtained by rotating each section 180°. Remove the mounting bolts and rotate or change the sections. Install the mounting bolts. Obtain additional wear by moving the end sections to the opposite
