(1) Wheel. (2) Hub. (3) Bolts. (4) Retainer. (5) Shims. (6) Housing.This procedure requires a 25 to 50 mm (1 to 2 inch) outside micrometer and a depth micrometer that has 50 mm (2 inch) of travel.Note: Perform this procedure while the wheel is on the machine. The tire and the rim must be removed.
Measure the thickness of retainer (4) with the outside micrometer. Measure the retainer at three places near the small gauge holes. Record the average of these three measurements.
Assemble the seal group in spindle (6) and in wheel (1). Apply oil on the wheel bearings. Install the wheel bearings and the wheel on the spindle.

Bolt Tightening Sequence
Install hub (2) on the spindle. Apply oil to the threads of three bolts (3) and use the bolts to install retainer (4) without shims. Install three bolts (3) finger tight in the locations that are shown in illustration 2.
Tighten bolts (3) in the retainer to a torque of 115 15 N m (80 10 lb ft). Tighten the bolts in the sequence that is shown in illustration 2.
Rotate the wheel for one revolution and tighten bolts (3) again to a torque of 115 15 N m (80 10 lb ft).
Loosen bolts (3) so that the wheel (1) can slide a slight amount downward on the wheel bearings.
Tighten bolts (3) to a torque of 20 7 N m (15 5 lb ft). Tighten bolts (3) in the sequence that is shown in illustration 2.
Rotate the wheel for one revolution and tighten bolts (4) again to a torque of 20 7 N m (15 5 lb ft).
To measure the distance from the retainer to the end of the spindle, use the depth micrometer. Measure the distance through the three small holes in the retainer.
Record the average of the three depth measurements. Determine the difference between the average thickness that was measured in Step 1 and the average depth that was measured in Step 9. The difference is the gap that is between the retainer and the end of the spindle.
Assemble shims (5) in order to obtain the same thickness that was determined in Step 10. This measurement is the thickness of shims (5) that must be installed.Note: The shims must be within 0.025 mm (.001 inch) of the thickness in Step 11.
Remove retainer (4). Install the necessary amount of shims (5) .
Install retainer (4) and bolts (3). Start at the top of the retainer. Torque the bolts evenly to 125 20 N m (92 15 lb ft). Torque bolts an additional 120 10°.
