Information:
There are problems that could be reported with Product Link, but caused by Product Link. The description of the problem is described as “A discrepancy of the service meter units”. This Information Element contains steps to determine the cause. Check for active Product Link diagnostic codes. Correct any diagnostic codes before proceeding. Visually inspect the following items:
PL121SR radio
VIMS 3G ECM
Antenna
CablesProduct Link depends on several communication links to transfer data from the machine to the office. The following procedures assume that these communication links are operating properly. The proper communication links are listed below:
The satellite network for VHF communications is operational in the geographic area of concern. The network is operational when messages can travel to the satellite and to Caterpillar® on earth.
Product Link is correctly configured to communicate on the VHF communications network.
The worldwide network of Cat® computers is passing messages to software for the Cat Equipmentmanager (EM).
The EM is configured properly and the software is functioning. The VIMS 3G ECM or the PL121SR radio should not be replaced without verifying that these issues have been investigated. Contact your Cat technical communicator for aid in resolving these issues.Note: The service meter hours that are reported by the VIMS 3G ECM should approximately match the machine operating hours.Test Step 1. ACCESS THE PRODUCT LINK THROUGH THE CAT® ELECTRONIC TECHNICIAN SERVICE TOOL
Connect the Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) service tool to the machine.
Verify that the VIMS 3G ECM is available. Expected Result:The VIMS 3G ECM is available. Results:
OK - The VIMS 3G ECM is available. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The VIMS 3G ECM is not present in Cat ET. Repair: Verify that the Product Link / VIMS 3G ECM system wiring has been installed correctly. Check the wiring with a multimeter. If the VIMS 3G ECM is not available, see Systems Operation, Troubleshooting, Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Service Tool Does Not Communicate with ECM" Section of this manual.STOPTest Step 2. VERIFY THAT THE PRODUCT LINK MODULE IS CONFIGURED PROPERLY
Go to the information pull-down menu.
Select "Current Totals".
Verify that the "Product Link Machine Operating Hours" match the machine service meter units. Expected Result:The hours are within 1%.Results:
OK - The hours are within 1%. The hours are synchronized. Product Link is operating correctly.STOP
NOT OK - The hours are not within 1%. Proceed to Test Step 3.Test Step 3. VERIFY THAT THE PRODUCT LINK MODULE MONITORS THE "MACHINE RUN STATUS" PROPERLY
Go to "Status Parameters" for Cat ET.
Verify that the alternator running input displays "Engine Off".
Start the machine.
Verify that the "Alternator Running Input" changes to "Engine Running".
Verify that the "Keyswitch Status" is "On". Expected Result:The Cat ET "Status" screen changes from "Engine Off" to "Engine Running" when the machine is started. The "Keyswitch Status" should be on.Results:
OK - The Cat ET screens are correct. The VIMS 3G ECM is correctly reading the "machine run status". This action allows VIMS 3G ECM to monitor the machine operating hours correctly.Repair: Check the splices for the R-Terminal wire (403-GN(Green)) and ECM power wire (308-YL(Yellow)) to ensure that
