Preparation
The procedure in this section assumes the following:
The flywheel was operating within limits before shutdown.
No adjustments have been made to the adjustment bolt on the upper bearing cartridge or the spring bolt on lower bearing cartridge.
The rotor is configured for operation.
The rotor is stopped and safe to work on.
The load cell read out has been recorded. Also, be sure that the load cell output is checked before and after unloading and before and after loading.
Be sure that the rotor temperature has been measured and recorded before unloading the bearing.Note: There is a concern for a possible loss of upper unloading. The loss of upper unloading can occur if the rotor is hot when unloaded and shrinks away from upper unloader as the rotor cools.Note: Thermal shrinkage could allow rotor to be less constrained from upward axial movement.
Ensure that the gapped rotor height is recorded on the sticker that is located on the front of the flywheel cooling shroud.
Ensure that the adjustment bolt, spring bolt, and retainers have markings to show rotational position of each bolt for operation
Ensure that the spring bolt retainer has the adhesive backed shims installed.
Record all measurements on the shipping form.Unload Bearing for Transportation
Remove the upper and lower sheet metal covers. Set aside.
Turn off the vacuum pump and break the vacuum on "0" degree port on the top of the flywheel assembly.

On upper bearing unloader, loosen the locknut (16), then turn the upper bearing unloader bolt (15) CCW one turn to raise the unloader bolt (15).
Perform the following on the upper bearing cartridge:
Check that the adjustment bolt head and retainer are marked and that marks are aligned. If marks are not aligned, remove the mark on the retainer, and make new marks that are aligned with marks on adjustment bolt hex head.
On upper bearing cartridge, loosen the four bolts on the upper bearing adjustment bolt retainer two full turns.Note: Do not turn adjustment bolt.
On lower bearing cartridge, reduce the torque on the six end plate bolts from 47 N m (35 ft-lbf) to 2.5 N m (22 in-lbf).
Loosen all of the bolts 1/8 turn in a criss-cross pattern. Then tighten to 30 N m (22 ft-lbf) using a star pattern. The tightening process must be completed before starting the unloading process.
On bottom bearing cartridge, ensure that the spring bolt head and the retainer are marked and that the marks are aligned.Note: If the marks are not aligned, remove the marks on the retainer. Make new marks on the retainer that are aligned with marks that are on the spring bolt hex head.
Perform the following two steps on the bottom bearing cartridge retainer.
Break and remove the lock nuts. Use one wrench to hold the lower mounting nut stable, and use another wrench to remove each lock nut.
Evenly loosen the four nuts. Loosen each nut with a 1/4 CCW turn increment, in a criss-crossing pattern. Use a 1-3-2-4 pattern. Remove the nuts and the spring bolt retainer and set aside.
