Information:
You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.Engine Valve Lash
Check/Adjust
Refer to the Service Manual for the complete procedure to perform valve lash check and/or adjustment.Engine Crankcase Breather System
Clean
1. Open the access cover on the right side of the machine. 2. Loosen the hose clamps and remove breather valve.3. Remove fasteners.4. Wash breather valve in clean, nonflammable solvent and dry with low pressure air or allow to dry. DO NOT submerge valve into solvent. The breather valve does not normally need to be cleaned, however if necessary, wash valve and dry with low pressure air.5. Inspect upper area of cylinder head for cleanliness. Wash with solvent and dry with low pressure air. Clean mounting flange face on manifold.6. Lightly lubricate nipple and install vent tube. Assemble and install in reverse order of removal. Tighten the hose clamps. If the crankcase breather system is not maintained on a regular basis, it will become plugged. A plugged crankcase breather would result in excessive crankcase pressure that may cause crankshaft seal leakage.7. Close the access cover.Water Spray System
Clean
1. Remove the fill cap. 2. Remove the filter bowl to drain the water tank.3. Clean and install the filter. See Water Spray System in the Every 10 Service Hours or Daily portion of this manual.4. Clean the water tank and drain the system.5. Clean the sprinklers. Refer to the next item.6. Fill the tank.Clean the Sprinklers
1. Remove cap.2. Remove the screen.3. Wash the screen in a clean, nonflammable solvent. Shake or blow dry.4. Install the screen and cap.5. Repeat procedure for each sprinkler.Cooling System Coolant
Change Coolant/Clean System
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material in the Cooling System Specifications section.
Drain the coolant earlier if the coolant is dirty or foaming is observed. 1. Open the access cover on the right side of the machine. 2. Open the access cover on the deck of the operator's platform.3. Loosen the radiator fill cap slowly to relieve pressure. Remove the radiator fill cap. 4. Open the drain valve at the bottom of the radiator and allow coolant to drain. Drain coolant into a suitable container. Always dispose of drained fluids as established by local regulations.5. Close the drain valve.6. Fill the system with clean water and a 6 to 10% concentration of cooling system cleaner.7. Start and run the engine for 1 1/2 hours.8. Stop the engine. Open the drain valve at the bottom of the radiator and allow coolant to drain.9. Flush the system with water, with the engine stopped, until the draining water is clear.10. Close the drain valve.11. Add the coolant solution. Refer to Cooling System Specifications and Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities in the Maintenance Section of this manual. Do not add supplemental coolant additive at this time, unless you are not using Caterpillar Antifreeze which contains additive.12. Start the engine and operate it, with the radiator cap off, until the thermostat
