If the drums are kept continuously wet, it helps to prevent hot asphalt from sticking to the drum surfaces during compaction.The drum water system consists of two identical, but separate systems, one at each end of the machine. The front system use electric motor (7) to turn pump (8) to provide water flow. The motor is turned on by a switch on the operators console. This switch has three positions, OFF, CONTINUOUS SPRAY or INTERMITTENT SPRAY. The INTERMITTENT SPRAY switch position uses a timed cycle to reduce water consumption. The INTERMITTENT SPRAY cycle is, ON 15 seconds and OFF 15 seconds. High pressure shut off switch (6) shuts off motor (7) when the system pressure reaches 275 kPa (40 psi) and then turns it back on when the pressure drops down to 200 kPa (29 psi).Recirculation valve (3) controls the amount of water which is recirculated or sprayed on the drum. When valve (3) is fully open, all water recirculates. When valve (3) is fully closed no water recirculates and all water flow is forced through the spray nozzles on bar (11). The normal operating position for valve (3) is midway between fully open and fully closed.Valves (9), (10), (13), (15) and (20) are drain valves.
