Tooling Setup
The reference article provides an improved procedure to adjust the transfer gear bearing clearance and pinion bearing clearance on D8L and D9L Tractors. Now, a method has been developed to accurately measure these bearing clearances. The tools needed are the 8S2328 Dial Indicator Test Group and the tooling shown in Illustration 1.
Illustration 1. Tools for checking transfer gear bearing clearance. See chart for description of above item numbers. The 2P8257 Plate (9), also from the 2P8260 Liner Installer Group, requires three 16 mm (5/8") diameter holes. Drill a hole 25 mm (1.0") from each end, and a third hole 25 mm (1.0") from the tapped center hole. See Illustration 1.
Illustration 1 also shows the tooling order of assembly to check bearing clearance for the input transfer gear. The two adapters clamp the transfer gear at location (7). Thus, lever (11) can be used to force the gear up or down. Two washers (3) fit into adapters (1) and (2) to center rod (6) in the gear.
1. Install the tooling in the transfer gear with the threaded rod, adapters, and retainer (4) centered in the gear.2. Tighten one of nuts (10) on top of the retainer to prevent gear movement. Two nuts (10) can then be used to turn the gear. See Illustration 2.3. Fasten modified plate (9) and lever assembly (11) to the housing with bolt (8) as shown in Illustration 2.4. Put the slotted end of the lever in a horizontal position on the threaded rod. Make sure there is 1 mm (.04") clearance between washers (5) and the lever.
Illustration 2. Tools installed for measuring bearing clearance of input transfer gears.5. Lubricate the washers.6. Install the dial indicator as shown.7. Lubricate the retainer surface for the dial indicator foot.Measuring Bearing Clearance For Input Transfer Gear
1. Push and hold the retainer down with the lever, and use a ratchet wrench to turn the gear at least three revolutions. Watch the dial indicator needle as it moves back and forth. Stop rotating the gear at the point of maximum needle movement.2. Mark the location (12) for the maximum needle movement on the retainer surface. See Illustration 3. Set the needle to zero while forcing the gear down.
Illustration 3. Measuring bearing clearance for input transfer gear. Location (12) is the point of maximum needle movement.3. Pull the gear upward with the lever while turning the gear at least three revolutions. Record the maximum needle reading obtained when the indicator foot is returned to location (12). This reading is the actual bearing clearance.4. Repeat the process. If correctly done, the result will be the same.Measuring Bearing Clearance For Pinion Gear
1. Screw threaded rod (6) into the pinion shaft. See Illustration 4.
Illustration 4. Tooling setup for measuring clearance of pinion gear bearing.2. Screw the lever rod into the puller hole in the bearing retainer flange.3. Adjust nuts (10) so the slotted end of the lever is level.4. Allow 1 mm (.04") clearance between the lever and each washer (5). Lubricate both
