Priority Valve (Normal Mode) (1) Passage to the Torque Converter Inlet Relief Valve (2) Spring (3) Spool Assembly (4) Passage (5) Inlet Passage (6) Poppet (7) Slug Chamber (8) Spool Chamber (9) Slug (10) Outlet to Pressure Tap (PV1) (11) Passage (12) Solenoid (13) Passage (14) Passage to Brake Valve and Transmission (15) Check Valve (16) Adjustment Screw (BB) Cutaway Section (CC) Component Surface (FF) Activated Components (GG) Tank Oil (JJ) Pump Oil (KK) Reduced Pump Oil (PP) Torque Converter OilIn Normal Mode, solenoid (12) is energized by the power train ECM. Oil from the torque converter charging section of the pump enters through inlet passage (5). Oil flows into slug chamber (7) through passage (4) and through poppet (6) .Oil from inlet passage (5) is directed through internal passages to passage (13). Solenoid (12) directs oil from passage (13) into passage (11) to spool chamber (8). The pressure of the oil acts on the area around slug (9) .Oil pressure causes spool assembly (3) to shift to the left toward adjustment screw (16). This allows oil to flow from inlet passage (5) through passage (1) to the torque converter. The pressure in inlet passage (5) is not high enough to open check valve (15). Therefore, the oil from the torque converter charging section of the pump does not mix with the oil from the transmission charging section that is present in passage (14) .Priority Mode

The valve is in Priority Mode in two situations:
Engine speed is low.
Power train oil is cold.In Priority Mode, solenoid (12) is de-energized. Oil from the torque converter charging section of the pump enters through inlet passage (5). Oil flows into slug chamber (7) through passage (4) and through poppet (6) .Oil from inlet passage (5) is directed through internal passages to passage (13). Solenoid (12) blocks the oil in passage (13). Solenoid (12) directs the oil in passage (11) and spool chamber (8) to the drain. The pressure is reduced on the area around slug (9) .The oil in slug chamber (7) moves slug (9) to the right. Because spool chamber (8) is open to the drain, spring (2) shifts spool assembly (3) to the right away from adjustment screw (16) .When spool assembly (3) is shifted to the right, most of the oil in inlet passage (5) is blocked from passage (1) to the torque converter. Pressure in inlet passage (5)
