On the C18, C32, and 3500 series engines listed above which are built with a Separate Circuit Aftercooler (SCAC) cooling system. A maximum of 20% glycol is allowed in the aftercooler circuit.Water mixed with Extended Life Inhibitor (ELI) alone, or water mixed with Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA) are both approved coolants for use in the aftercooler circuit, but are not recommended for use in applications that require freeze protection. The standard maintenance requirements for ELI and SCA are called out in the engine "Operation and Maintenance Manual". For more information on ELI see, Engine News, SEBD9670.Extended Life Coolant (ELC), Diesel Engine Antifreeze Coolant (DEAC), or other approved conventional coolants can be used in aftercooler circuits where freeze protection is required, but must be diluted to ensure that the maximum of 20% glycol concentration is present. Consult the engine "Operation and Maintenance Manual" or Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6251, "Cat Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations" for specifications on approved conventional coolants.An example of mixing a 20% glycol solution is given in Table 1.

Multiply desired percent of glycol ELC by total system volume to obtain the volume of ELC concentrate needed by the system.
After adding ELC to the system, multiply the percent concentrate of ELI (column 2) by total system volume to obtain the volume of ELI needed by the system.
Add water to fill remaining system volume.This information can also be found in Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6251, "Cat Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations" or your engine-specific "Operation and Maintenance Manual".The new coolant requirement for a 20% maximum glycol does not apply to the jacket water circuits. Water mixed with ELI or SCA are approved coolants for the jacket water circuit. ELC, DEAC, or approved conventional coolants containing glycol are recommended in applications that require freeze protection.
