Remove And Install Crankshaft Main Bearings
start by: a) remove oil pump1. Remove No. 2 and No. 6 main bearing caps. 2. Use tool (A) to remove the upper halves of main bearings by turning crankshaft and pushing the bearing out of block. Remove the lower halves of bearings from caps.3. Put clean engine oil on bearing surfaces of upper halves of bearings. Use tool (A) to install upper halves in cylinder block.4. Clean the main bearing caps, and install lower halves of bearings in caps. 5. Use wire (C) to check bearing clearance. Install caps and tighten both nuts to 70 5 lb.ft. (9.7 0.7 mkg). Put a mark across nuts and studs, and turn an additional 90° from mark. Remove caps and check thickness of wire (C) to find bearing clearance. Bearing clearance must be .0030 to .0059 in. (0.07 to 0.14 mm) for new parts. Maximum permissible clearance for used parts is .010 in. (0.254 mm). 6. Put clean engine oil on threads of studs, face of washers, and lower halves of bearings. Put the bearing caps in position with number on cap is on same side and the same as number on the block. Install washers and nuts. Tighten nuts to 70 5 lb.ft. (9.7 0.7 mkg). Put a mark across the nuts and studs, and turn nuts an additional 90° from mark as shown.7. Remove the No. 1, 3, 4, 5, and 7 main bearing caps, and do Steps 2 through 6 again. 8. Use indicator group (B) to check end play of crankshaft as controlled by bearing (1) on No. 4 bearing cap (2). End play with new parts should be .011 to .018 in. (0.28 to 0.46 mm).
