Check the part numbers (listed on the next page)with package date codes prior to May 1, 2001 (i.e. 010501XXXX). Open sealkit box, verify the correct instruction form number contained inside. InsertSpecial Instruction (REHS0810) if necessary. Dealer Parts Management may have receivedinstruction from Caterpillar to inspect parts stock prior to the releaseof this Service Letter. If the inspection has been completed, no furtheraction is required.

SERVICE CLAIM ALLOWANCES
Caterpillar will allow 0.05 hours for each kitreworked. Submit one claim for all seal kits that are reworked from partsstock.PARTS DISPOSITION
Handle the parts in accordance with your WarrantyBulletin on warranty parts handling.Attach. (1-Special Instructions) 3. Install the U-Cup seal (3) in thehead. Refer to Illustration I in order to install the seal with theopen end of the "U" facing toward thepistonend of the cylinder.Note: In some cases, the axialwidth of the Caterpillar U-cup seal may be different from the U-cup sealthat is being replaced, The Caterpillar U-cup seal is correctly sized,based on the rod diameter and the seal groove diameter. The differencein size of the Caterpillar U-cup seal will not cause a sealing problem,even though there may be unused space in the seal groove, The U-cup sealwill not move from the downstream groove wall when the rod is retracting.Pressure will hold the U-cup seal against the back of the seal groove.Also, the friction on the outside diameter of the seal is much greaterthan the friction on the inside diameter, which will also keep the sealfirmly seated in the back of the seal groove. Because of these factors,the U-cup seal will not touch the upstream side of the seal groove. Therefore,the difference in the axial width between the U-cup seal and the seal grooveis not a factor in providing good sealing.
Use sandpaper or emery cloth to scuffthe surfaces of the counterbore in the cylinder head and the outside diameterof the wiper seal's metal shell (4).
Clean the counterbore in the head andthe outside diameter of the wiper seal's metal shell with 8T-9011 ComponentCleaner or 6V-1541 Quick Cure Primer. Clean the counterbore and the metalshell until neither of the components discolor a clean white towel.
Note: The metal shell ofthe wiper seal is coated with a corrosion inhibitor. This may prevent properbonding of the wiper seal to the cylinder head if the inhibitor is notremoved. After cleaning, do not touch the counterbore or the metal shellbecause the oil from your fingers may prevent a good bond. Handle the sealby the lip only.6. Apply 6V-1541 Quick Cure Primeron the counterbore and the metal shell. Allow the primer to dry. The primerwill dry in approximately 30 seconds.7. Apply 7M-7456 Bearing Mount Compoundevenly but do not apply the Bearing Mount Compound
