Start By:a. remove front tires and rims Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools and Shop Product Guide, NENG2500", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. The removal and installation of the front wheels, bearings, and Duo Cone seals are the same for both sides of the machine. For simplicity, the removal and installation of the front wheels, bearings, and Duo Cone seals is shown for only one side. Repeat the procedure for the remaining wheel. 1. Remove plug (3) and drain the front wheel housing in a suitable container for proper disposal or storage. The capacity of the front wheel housing is 4.7 liters (1.25 U.S. gal). It may be necessary to use 3/8 in - 16 NC Forcing Screws to remove cover (1).2. Remove six bolts (2), and cover (1) from the front wheel housing. Remove the O-ring seal from cover (1). Check the O-ring seal for wear or damage, and replace if necessary. 3. Remove plug (4), and drain the front service brake in a suitable container for proper storage or disposal. 4. Attach Tool (A) to front wheel housing (5). Attach lifting slings to Tool (A) and a suitable lifting device. Support the weight of the front wheel housing. It may be necessary to use 3/8 in - 16 NC Forcing Screws to remove retaining plate (7).5. Remove eight bolts (6), retaining plate (7) and the shims.6. Remove outer bearing cone (8) from front wheel housing (5).7. Remove front wheel housing (5). The weight of front wheel housing (5) is 490 kg (1080 lb). 8. Remove outer bearing cup (9) from the front wheel housing. 9. Remove inner bearing cup (10) from the front wheel housing.10. Remove two Duo-Cone seals (11) and (12) from the front wheel housing. Check the seals for wear or damage, and replace if necessary. 11. Remove inner bearing cone (14) from the wheel spindle.12. Remove two Duo-Cone seals (13) and (15) from the service brake. Check the seals for wear or damage, and replace if necessary. The following steps are for the installation of the front wheel bearings & Duo-Cone seals. Inspect all parts for damage or wear prior to installation. If necessary, replace a worn or damaged part with a new part. Make sure the rubber toric rings and all surfaces that make contact with them are clean and dry at assembly. Put a small amount of clean oil on the surface of the metal seals that make contact with each other.
