Lubricate main bearing studs (17) with clean engine oil. Install main bearing stud (17). Use Tooling (F) and a suitable torque wrench to tighten main bearing stud (17). Tighten main bearing stud (17) to a torque of 100 20 N m (74 15 lb ft).Note: Wipe parts clean before installation. If new bearings are kept in their box until installation, they should be clean. If the bearing is determined to be clean from the box, the bearing should be installed as it was found in the package and not cleaned. However, if the bearings have dust or dirt on the running surface (ID) on them from storage, the running surface should not be wiped clean. Wiping the bearing running surface could cause the dust or dirt to become embedded in the bearing surface. To clean bearing running surfaces, put them in a solvent tank. They can then be rinsed and blown dry. If the bearing has debris on the backside of the bearing, on the steel back, use a proper solvent, such as Brake Clean, and a lint free rag to clean the new bearing back. Apply a light film of clean oil to back of bearing surface using a clean rag and a generous amount of oil on the front of each bearing.

Install thrust bearing (15) into the rear of cylinder block (14). Lightly lubricate upper main bearings (16) and the upper connecting rod bearings with clean engine oil. Install upper main bearings (16) into cylinder block (14).

Illustration 4 g01224401Note: The crankshaft installation guide will eliminate the crank journal contact with the block and studs.
Use Tooling (J) to install crankshaft (12). Attach a suitable lifting device onto crankshaft (12). The weight of crankshaft (12) is approximately 748 kg (1650 lb). Install crankshaft (12).
Use Tooling (A) to rotate the engine slightly above the horizontal position.

Lubricate lower main bearing (7) with clean engine oil. Install lower main bearing (7) into main bearing cap (6).
Use Tooling (G) to install main bearing caps (6).

Lubricate the main bearing studs with clean engine oil. Install plate (4). Install nuts (3) for the crankshaft main bearings finger tight. Lubricate bolts (5) with clean engine oil. Install bolts (5) finger tight.
