The trucks have a separate emergency braking air supply. The trucks can be stopped safely with the emergency braking system, should a service/retarder air system failure occur. Pull the red lever on the left all the way back for emergency application of all four wheel brakes.When the engine is turning, driving the transmission pump, the emergency braking system can be applied and released repeatedly. The air system must be in normal condition to get repeated applications.If the engine has stopped rotating, the transmission pump will also be stopped. If the pump has failed, the engine might be running, but brakes will be applied. Then, if the emergency brake control is returned to off, the brakes will not release. Transmission oil pressure is required, and the emergency air system pressure must be normal, to release the brakes. If the engine quits operating due to fuel loss, do not shift the transmission to neutral. This could allow the engine to stop rotating. If the engine is not rotating, the supply of oil to the rear disc brakes and steering pumps would then stop. If all air in emergency system is lost, the rear brakes will apply automatically, and remain applied.If the truck must be moved after the brakes are set and, the engine can't be run, refer to Operator's Guide on towing.For safety, the parking brake control, located on the shift console, can be applied, and released, with the transmission in gear. The truck can be positioned for loading and the brakes set, before shifting to neutral. Just as important, the truck can be put in gear before releasing the brakes to pull away.
