Information:

Stopping the engine immediately after it has been working under load, can result in overheating and accelerated wear of the engine components. Excessive temperatures in the turbocharger centerhousing will cause oil coking problems. Follow the stopping procedure outlined below, to allow the engine to cool.
Prior to stopping an engine that is being operated at low loads, run the engine at LOW IDLE for 30 seconds before stopping. If the engine is being operated at high load, then it should be run at LOW IDLE for five minutes to reduce and stabilize internal engine coolant and oil temperatures before stopping. Make sure the Engine Stopping procedure is understood. The engine may be shutdown in several ways. To manually stop the engine, refer to the locomotive OEM manual for information and instructions.Emergency stops may be made through the Emergency Stop Pushbutton (ESPB) if equipped with an Emergency Stop Pushbutton (ESPB).
Do not use Emergency Stop Pushbutton except in emergencies. Emergency stop controls are for EMERGENCY use ONLY. DO NOT use Emergency shutoff devices or controls for normal stopping procedure.
1. Operate the engine at LOW IDLE notch position until:* The jacket water temperature reads 85°C (185°F) (no water temperature rise across the engine) and* The exhaust port temperature is down to at least 150°C (300°F), which may take as long as fifteen minutes (if exhaust port temperature is equipped).2. Continue to operate the engine without load for at least five minutes to further cool the engine. 3. Check the crankcase oil level while the engine is idling. Maintain the oil level between the ADD and FULL marks on the ENGINE AT LOW IDLE WITH OIL WARM side of the dipstick.4. The engine may be stopped by using one of the following controls.* Place ENGINE RUN/STOP toggle switch in the STOP position.* Turn the ENGINE FUEL ON/OFF switch to OFF position.* Push STOP button on locomotive dash or other location on gauge panel.* Push STOP button on either side of locomotive near each fuel tank (if equipped). The engine will coast to a stop. Be sure to secure any external system components that have been operating to support the engine operation.Emergency Stop Procedure
If the need for emergency engine shutdown occurs, use the following procedure to stop the engine. * Push the EMERGENCY STOP Pushbutton located on the control panel or the engine junction box. This will activate the air and/or fuel shutoffs.
Do NOT start the engine until the problem necessitating the emergency stop has been located and corrected.
* Reset the EMERGENCY STOP Pushbutton (pull out and rotate the button in the direction indicated on the button). Some EMERGENCY STOP Pushbuttons can be pulled out to reset, not requiring any rotation. After Stopping the Engine
1. If freezing temperatures are expected, allow the expansion water tank to cool, then check the coolant for proper antifreeze protection. The system must be protected against freezing to the lowest expected outside temperature. Refer to the Cooling System Specifications section of this manual for proper cooling system information.
Use only the recommended cooling
