Record the number that is etched into the casting as Dimension (X).

Record the number that is stamped into pinion shaft (1) as Dimension (Y).

Use yoke (2) as a stand. Position head bearing cone (3) into head bearing cup (4). Apply pressure to head bearing cone (3) while turning head bearing cone (3) a minimum of ten revolutions. Measure the thickness of head bearing cone (3) and head bearing cup (4). Record this measurement as Dimension (Z).

Dimension (X), minus Dimension (Y), minus Dimension (Z) equals the required thickness for shim (5).

Lower the temperature of head bearing cup (4). Install head bearing cup (4).

Raise the temperature of head bearing cone (3). Install head bearing cone (3).

Install the same spacer (6) that was removed.

Lower the temperature of bearing cup (7). Install bearing cup (7).

Install pinion shaft (1).

Raise the temperature of bearing cone (8). Install bearing cone (8).

Install yoke (2) and washer (9).

Install spanner nut (10) and only hand tighten. Install bolt (11).

Attach Tooling (B). Attach two suitable vice grips in order to hold pinion flange holder (12) in position. Use Tooling (B) in order to tighten spanner nut (10) (not shown) to a torque of 1200 N m (885 lb ft). Note: Rotate the pinion shaft several times in both directions while tightening spanner nut (10).

Use Tooling (C) in order to check the rolling torque of pinion shaft (1) (not shown). The rolling torque must fall between 1.5 - 4.0 N m (13.28 - 35.40 lb in) without outer seal. Note: If the rolling torque is too low, install a thinner shim. If the rolling torque is too high, install a thicker shim.
