Apply clean SAE 30 engine oil on the upper halves of the main bearings. Use Tooling (A) in order to install the upper halves of the odd number main bearings.
Clean the main bearing caps and install the lower halves of the main bearings in the main bearing caps. Note: Ensure that the crankshaft is held up against the upper main bearing with a force equal to the weight of the crankshaft.

Use Tooling (A) in order to check the main bearing clearance, as shown.
Install the main bearing caps. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 40 4 N m (30 3 lb ft).
Place a mark on both bolt heads and bearing caps. Turn each bolt an additional 90°.
Remove the main bearing caps. Measure thickness of Tooling (A). Main bearing clearance with new bearings must be 0.120 0.040 mm (0.0047 0.0016 inch). Maximum permissible clearance with used bearings is 0.254 mm (.010 inch).

Apply clean SAE 30 engine oil on the threads of the main bearing cap bolts, face of the washers, and the lower halves of the main bearings. Place main bearing caps (1) in position on the engine with the number on the main bearing cap in the direction of the respective number on the pan face on the left side of the cylinder block.
Install the bolts and washers. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 40 4 N m (30 3 lb ft).
Place a mark on both bolt heads and the main bearing caps. Turn the bolts an additional 90°.
Apply clean SAE 30 engine oil on the new thrust bearings and install the new thrust bearings in the cylinder block with the groove in the thrust bearing against the crankshaft.
Repeat steps 1 through 10 for the remaining bearings.
Check the end play of the crankshaft with Tooling (B). End play with new bearings must be 0.216 0.152 mm (0.0085 0.006 inch). Maximum permissible end play with used bearings is 0.64 mm (0.025 inch). End By:
Install the oil pan plate. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Oil Pan Plate - Remove and Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
Install the engine oil pump. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Oil Pump - Install" for the engine that is being serviced.
