Information:
This CID 0596 FMI 14 diagnostic code is associated with the communication between the Machine ECM and the Implement ECM. The communication is conducted on the Cat Data Link circuit or the communication that is conducted over the SAE J1939 CAN A Data Link circuit. The FMI 14 means that the Machine ECM is communicating with the Implement ECM on the involved data link circuit. However, the Machine ECM is not receiving expected operating parameter information. The possible causes of the diagnostic code are listed below:
The software that is installed on the Implement ECM is incorrect.
The software that is installed on the Machine ECM is incorrect.
Incompatible software may be installed.
A new ECM that is installed is not the correct part.Test Step 1. VERIFY THE HARDWARE AND THE SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS
Use Cat Electronic Technician (ET) in order to verify that the versions of software are compatible. Expected Result:The proper versions of software are installed on the Implement ECM and the Machine ECM.Results:
OK - The versions of software are compatible. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The proper software is not installed.Repair: Flash the proper software to the appropriate ECM. Cycle the key switch in order to initialize the new software. Ensure that the diagnostic code is no longer active. STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.
Operate the machine.
Check the status of the CID 0596 FMI 14 diagnostic code. Expected Result:The CID 0596 FMI 14 diagnostic code is not active. Results:
OK - The CID 0596 FMI 14 diagnostic code is not active. The diagnostic code does not exist at this time. The initial diagnostic code could have been caused by a problem during start-up with one of the controls of the ECM. Resume normal operation.STOP
NOT OK - The CID 0596 FMI 14 diagnostic code is active. The diagnostic code has not been corrected.Repair: Repeat this procedure again and verify that the information is correct. If the cause of the problem is not found, the ECM that has activated the diagnostic code may have failed. Prior to replacing an ECM, always contact the Technical Communicator at your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may effect repair time. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found, replace the ECM that has activated the diagnostic code. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace".STOP
