Information:
Shift Lever
There are variations in shift levers from the factory. Because of these variations, the position of first gear and the position of second gear may overlap. The ECM determines the detent for first gear by looking for a stable duty cycle that is at a lower duty cycle than the duty cycle of the current first gear. When a stable duty cycle is read the ECM uses the stable value as the new first gear position. The ECM adjusts the position for second gear accordingly.Because of these variations, the position of first gear and the position of second gear may not always be determined by the ECM. This will happen when a new shift lever is installed on the machine or if the power train ECM is replaced. Therefore, some manual adjustment is necessary. The ECM will reset the shift lever to the factory setting when the following conditions exist.
The gear selector is in the neutral position.
The switch for the drive gear is depressed for 15 seconds.Note: Depressing the switch for the drive gear for this amount of time should not normally occur. This is a safe method of resetting the calibrations. It is also necessary to adjust the neutral gear PWM input. Use the ET or the Caterpillar Monitoring System to view this adjustment. Put the shift lever in neutral and adjust the set screw on the shift lever until 75.0 is shown.
