(3) Case Damage to the crankshaft vibration damper or failure of the crankshaft vibration damper can increase torsional vibrations. This condition can result in damage to the crankshaft and to other engine components. A deteriorating damper can cause excessive gear train noise at variable points in the speed range. The damper is mounted to the crankshaft which is located behind the belt guard on the front of the engine.Inspection
Inspect the damper for the following conditions:
The damper is dented, cracked, or fluid is leaking from the damper.
The paint on the damper is discolored from excessive heat.
The damper is bent.
The bolt holes are worn or there is a loose fit for the bolts.
The engine has had a crankshaft failure due to torsional forces.Replace the damper if any of these conditions exist.Removal and Installation
Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Belts - Inspect/Adjust/Replace" for information on removing and on installing the belt. Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Vibration Damper and Pulley - Remove and Install" for information on removing and installing the damper.Compressor (Supercharger) Clutch - Inspect
The front pulley is a critical part for the components in the front of the engine that are belt driven. These components include the water pump, alternator, and compressor (supercharger). The water pump and alternator rotate whenever the engine is rotating. The supercharger (compressor) clutch is controlled by the engine ECM based on operating conditions. When the supercharger (compressor) clutch is energized, the supercharger rotates and increases available power.

Compressor (Supercharger) clutch
Damage to the compressor (supercharger) clutch or failure of the compressor (supercharger) clutch can increase vibrations. This condition can result in damage to engine components and a loss of power. A deteriorating compressor (supercharger) clutch can cause excessive gear train noise at variable points in the speed range. The compressor (supercharger) clutch is located behind the belt guard on the front of the engine.Inspection
Inspect the compressor (supercharger) clutch for the following conditions:
The compressor (supercharger) clutch is dented, cracked, or fluid is leaking from the damper.
The paint on the compressor (supercharger) clutch is discolored from excessive heat.
The compressor (supercharger) clutch is bent.
The bolt holes are worn or there is a loose fit for the bolts.
The engine has had a crankshaft failure due to torsional forces.Replace the compressor (supercharger) clutch if any of these conditions exist. If the engine has had diagnostic codes related to the supercharger or the compressor (supercharger) clutch and pulley operation, contact your local Cat dealer.Removal and Installation
Refer to the Disassembly and Assembly Manual, "Supercharger Clutch and Pulley - Remove and Install" for information on removing and installing the compressor (supercharger) clutch and pulley.
